billion miles a year, Great BritainEach council area is lit by the share of its adults who ride a bike. Hi-vis yellow is a cycling town; the darker it gets, the more a place drives. The 2020 lockdown sent people out on bikes; a year later fewer rode than before it. Press play, or tap an area.
Sources: Department for Transport and Sport England, Active Lives Survey, table CW0302 (adults aged 16 and over, by where they live; each year runs from mid-November to mid-November, so 2020 means November 2019 to November 2020). Areas with fewer than 30 people answering are not published and show as no data, as are councils created by mergers before their first year on the new boundaries (for example North Yorkshire, Somerset and Cumbria’s two successors, from 2023); small councils, the Isles of Scilly in particular, have wide margins of error. City of London is not published. Miles: Department for Transport, Road Traffic Estimates, table TRA0401, Great Britain, public roads and the cycle paths beside them. The two sources measure different things over different areas, so they are shown side by side, not combined. Outlines: ONS open boundary data, April 2023 councils. Open Government Licence.
